Football rumours: where next for Mauricio Pochettino?

Guardian - ons, 20/11/2019 - 09:42

Former Spurs manager will not be kicking his heels for long

A world of infinite possibility has suddenly opened up for Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino. The former Spurs boss – and yes it does feel strange suddenly saying that – is unlikely to be kicking his heels for long. Bayern Munich currently have an interim manager in the shape of Hans-Dieter Flick, while Zinedine Zidane and Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s coats hang on a shoogly peg at Real Madrid and Manchester United respectively. Ears will be pricking up all over the shop. There’s also been talk of Arsenal and Barcelona, but, again respectively, come off it and come on.

• Daniel Levy locked in talks with Mourinho
• Pochettino dismissed after dismal run of results

Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked as the manager of Tottenham, with the club already locked in talks with José Mourinho to be his replacement. Mourinho, who has been out of work since his dismissal by Manchester United last December, has made little secret of his desire to return to the Premier League.

Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, has opened talks with Mourinho, who has managed Chelsea on two occasions, with the discussions focusing on transfer budgets and the club’s vision for the immediate future. Levy is a long-standing admirer of Mourinho and both parties now believe a deal for him to take over is close.

Mauricio Pochettino’s frustrations with slow player turnover boiled over this summer, leading to his eventual departure

To understand how it has come to this for Mauricio Pochettino, why his Tottenham team have flatlined in the Premier League and why he has now been sacked as the manager, it is necessary to consider a concept that he holds dear. It involves the natural cycle of an elite player’s development.

When the player is young, he is grateful for opportunity and he seizes it with everything he has. He becomes a regular, a star, a full international. He wants more money. Then, in many cases, he wants an opportunity at another club, a bigger club, perhaps. He thinks he deserves even more money.
